On 9 April 2022 Procida began its year as the Italian Capital of Culture: 150 events in 330 days, 350 artists from 45 countries. Ties, inclusive collaboration and eco-sustainability, these are the key principles of the program.
The program, divided into 5 sections – Procida invents, Procida inspires, Procida includes, Procida learns, Procida innova – includes projects for the enhancement and restitution of public spaces to the community, training workshops on topics such as eco-sustainable development, the future of the younger generations and the conservation and development of the island’s cultural identity. There will be opera concerts, dance, photography and art performances.
After the opening ceremony inspired by the Myths of the Sea, attended by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, the program immediately went live with one of the great identity rites of the island, the procession of The Mysteries of Good Friday, which involves hundreds of local workers, who starting from 2022 will rethink the craftsmanship through reuse, recycling and recovery with a view to eco-sustainability of tradition. After two years of absence due to the pandemic, the procession has returned to parade through the streets of the island, with its traditional “mysteries” – allegorical tables representing episodes from the Old and New Testament – and the statues of Our Lady of Sorrows and Christ Dead of Lantriceni, one of the most precious assets of the artistic heritage of Procida.
